NO CONTENT OUTLINE

-Every noun in French needs an article. You will also need to memorize the gender of every noun, but don’t worry. For now, here are the articles.

m - male f - female

Un – a/an (m) Une – a/an (f) Des – some (both m and f) Le/L’ – The (m) La/L’ – The (f) Les – The (both m and f)

-For example:

Arbre is masculine so ‘a tree’ would be: un arbre ‘une arbre’ is wrong, since there is a feminine article.

If you wanted to refer to ‘trees’ and you weren’t being specific, it would be: des arbres

‘The tree’

, although it is masculine, would be: l’arbre Since the noun begins with a vowel, it would be l’, and not ‘le arbre’.

If you wanted to refer to ‘the trees’, it would be ‘les arbres’

‘L’homme’ means ‘the man’. The reason there is an apostrophe is because of the ‘h’ being silent. But this is not always the case with words such as:

La hache – the axe

Even though the ‘h’ is silent, it’s still ‘La’.
