A list of comparatives, their meanings and uses which can be utilized in making comparisons between qualities and quantities.

Comparatives are normally used to compare two or more things. It can be categorized into the following forms:

  • Comparative words
  • Adjectives
  • Prepositions

Comparative words

  1. Más - more
  2. Menos - less
  3. Tan - so
  4. Mejor – Better
  5. Peor – Worse
  6. Igual – Same
  7. Diferente – Different
  8. Que - than

Adjectives

  1. Rápido/a - fast/quick
  2. Lento/a - slow
  3. Fuerte - strong
  4. Débil – weak
  5. Nuevo/a – new
  6. Viejo/a – old

Prepositions

  1. Como - as/like/such as
  2. Con - with
  3. Bajo - under
  4. Entre - between
  5. Hacia - toward

Using comparatives

General rules:

  • More than - verb + más + adjective + que (y)
  • Less than - verb + menos + adjective + que (y)
  • As….as - verb + tan + adjective + (y)

Leo más rápido que tú I read faster than you More than
Marcia corre más rápido que tú Marcia runs faster than you More than
Soy menos organizada que tú I am less organized than you Less than
Juan trabaja menos horas que Pedro Juan works fewer hours than Pedro Less than
Soy tan educada como mi mamá I am as polite as my mom As (x) as
Lena es tan talentosa como su hermana Lena is as talented as her sister As (x) as

NOTE:

  • The (y) represents tú but any pronoun can be inserted in that space once needed.
